Please Note: All courses are drawn from the Fairfax County Public Schools Music PROGRAM OF STUDIES. The following items describe the concepts and materials that will be applied to each course.

Cadet Band (if available)

One Year Course............................................................................ 1 Credit (Fees required)
Objective............................................................... Performance/Preparation for Concert Band
Prerequisite....................................................................... Interview with Director of Bands

Students will be given basic instruction on band instruments. There will be much emphasis on the fundamentals of sound production on the student’s selected instrument, embouchure, hand position, rhythm, note reading, etc.

Concert Band

One Year Course............................................................................ 1 Credit (Fees required)
Objective........................................................... Performance/Preparation for Symphonic Winds
Prerequisite.......................................................... Interview or audition with Director of Bands

Students will receive intense study of band literature. Outside-of-school rehearsals will be required and the group will have some public performances. These students will develop technical skills and the ability to perform exceptionally. Members from this ensemble may participate in The Marching Chargers by recommendation or audition.

Symphonic Winds

Objective..................................................................... Performance of Symphonic Literature
Prerequisite...................................................... Audition or recommendation - Director of Bands

As the Premiere Symphonic Ensemble at Chantilly High School the students will perform on an advanced level and should expect more than average after-school performance and rehearsal. The members of this ensemble are required to be in the Marching Chargers. This class is for the most dedicated of Symphonic students.

Workshop Jazz

One Year Course............................................................................ 1 Credit (Fees required)
Objective.................................................. Performance/preparation for the Chantilly Jazz Band
Prerequisite...................................................... Audition or recommendation - Director of Bands

Students receive an intense study of Jazz and Symphonic literature. Students will be required to rehearse after-school and make public performances. These students may be involved in the Concert Band and are required to be in the Marching Chargers for after-school rehearsals and performances.

Chantilly Jazz

Prerequisite...................................................... Audition or recommendation - Director of Bands

This is the Premiere performing Jazz Ensemble at Chantilly High School. These students will explore an advanced level of Jazz and Symphonic Music. These students will perform regularly and rehearse after-school weekly. These students will be required to perform with the Symphonic Winds and The Marching Chargers. This course is only for the most dedicated musician.

Percussion Ensemble

Objective..................................................... Establish well-rounded advanced percussion players
Prerequisite............................................................... Interview – Assistant Director of Bands

Students will learn specific percussion techniques and different styles of music.  Styles will include:  Marching Band techniques, concert percussion, jazz, jazz drum set, Latin and percussion ensemble. They are required to learn all areas of percussion instruments. The class will include:  Ensemble performance, Concert Band performances, solos, writing music and improvisation. This course will include all levels of students from beginner to advanced.

Jazz Combo

Jazz Combo is an after-school class studying various literature styles for individual performances and to support other organizations. The curriculum emphasizes improvisation and styles of the jazz idiom. The Jazz Combo will accompany other performances, such as Touch of Class. Instrumentation of the group is at the discretion of the instructor.

Music Theory

One Year Course.............................................................................................. 1 Credit
Prerequisite...................................................................................... Ability to read music

Students are instructed in basic music theory which will develop their understanding of and skill in recognizing and notating all major and minor scales, rhythms in simple and compound meters, and triadic chord structures.  Composition written in standard notation of simple melodies, with accompanying chords and keyboard performance of simple tunes, may also be included.  Students will become acquainted with appropriate musical terms.

AP Music Theory (if available)

Prerequisite.................................................................................. Permission of Instructor

The purpose of this course is to prepare students to take the Advanced Placement music theory examination, with college credit and/or placement being awarded if a qualifying score is achieved. Students are given a solid foundation in intervals, pitch patterns, metric/rhythmic patterns, chords, and the terms that are part of a basic understanding of reading, performing, and listening to music. Analysis and some elementary composition, aural skills, sight-singing, and keyboard harmony will also be included.
